The onset of the second stage of the project „Support to Strengthening Migration and Asylum Management in Republic of Serbia,“ carried out by the International Organization for Migration with the support of the British Embassy in Serbia, will be marked by holding a conference entitled „The New Elements in the System of Asylum and Migration in Republic of Serbia and the Challenges of Its Implementation.“
The aim of the conference, scheduled for Monday, September 17th, 2018 in Hotel „Zira“ is to gather together at one place, for the first time, all various actors who, in their various capacities, participate in the asylum procedure. Renowned international experts, public servants taking part in the asylum procedure, as well as representatives of other institutions important for establishing a successful and effective system of asylum in Republic of Serbia, will take part at the conference, as well as a broader academic community, which is expected to actively contribute to discussions.
The participants of the conference will be welcomed by Lidija Marković, Head of IOM Office in Serbia, Tracy Gallagher, Deputy British Ambassador to Serbia and Biljana Braithwaite, Program Manager for the Western Balkan of the AIRE Centre.
The first, introductory panel, dedicated to new elements in the asylum system at the European level, will feature a discussion on reform of the common European asylum system, the new case law of the European Court for Human Rights and challenges in upholding its standards in Republic of Serbia. The second panel is dedicated to new elements in the system of asylum in Republic of Serbia, given that the new Law on Asylum and Temporary Protection entered into force in June 2018. The last panel is dedicated to new elements in the legislative framework in the field of asylum and migration, with special emphasis on new elements introduced by Serbia’s Law on Foreigners that will start to be implemented in early October this year, which will directly affect implementation of the Law on Asylum and Temporary Protection.
The project „Support to Strengthening Migration and Asylum Management in Republic of Serbia“ has been initiated as a reaction to the migrant crisis in the Western Balkan region in 2015. The crisis has underlined the need to further reform and establishment of a more efficient system of migration and asylum management in Republic of Serbia.
